Mike Lata, a native of western Massachusetts, cooked in Boston, Martha's Vineyard, New Orleans, Atlanta and France before settling in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1998, where he worked as chef at Anson. In April 2003 he opened FIG at the corner of Meeting and Hasell streets with partner Adam Nemirow, serving as executive chef and co-owner, and later co-opened the seafood restaurant and oyster hall The Ordinary, a James Beard Foundation finalist for Best New Restaurant in 2013. Lata received the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: Southeast in 2009 and was a semifinalist for Outstanding Chef in 2017 and 2018; he is also a co-founder of Slow Food Charleston.
