Karen Akunowicz opened Bar Volpe in November 2021 at 170 West Broadway in South Boston, a few doors from her first restaurant, Fox & the Knife, and turned the menu toward the south of Italy — Sicily, Naples, Campania, Puglia. Pasta rolled in the restaurant's own pastificio anchors the cooking: Jonah crab with spaghetti al limone, lobster with squid-ink casarecce, saffron malloreddus in a ragù of spicy sausage, preceded by plates such as lardo-topped shrimp toast. Two bars, a long list of amari, and candles throughout set the tone of the 5,200-square-foot room, which Michelin includes among its Selected restaurants.
