Eating & drinking in Sonoma
Sonoma's food record begins with wine. Franciscan padres at Mission San Francisco Solano planted the first vineyard in Sonoma Valley in 1825 to make sacramental wine; after the mission's secularization in 1835, General Mariano Vallejo took over the plantings, and the site later passed to Samuele and Elvira Sebastiani. Commercial viticulture followed with Buena Vista, founded in 1857 by Agoston Haraszthy and described as the oldest operating winery in California, and Gundlach Bundschu, established the following year and still family-owned.
Dairy and cheese form the second thread. Vella Cheese Company was founded near the Plaza in 1931, when local dairymen asked Gaetano "Tom" Vella to open his own fromagerie; his dry Monterey Jack became the house signature, and his son Ignazio "Ig" Vella was known as a godfather of American artisanal cheese. The company ceased production in 2026 after 94 years.
Restaurant culture consolidated around the Plaza late. Sondra Bernstein opened the girl & the fig in Glen Ellen in 1997, moving it to downtown Sonoma in 2001 with John Toulze as executive chef, a model built on local produce and French cooking. Fine dining arrived with Enclos, opened in December 2024 by Stone Edge Farm Vineyards & Winery under chef Brian Limoges, which held two Michelin stars in 2025 and three in the 2026 California guide.
