Eating & drinking in Saint Helena
St. Helena sits at the center of Napa Valley's wine trade, and its food culture has always been downstream of that industry. Charles Krug established a winery here in 1861, generally recorded as the valley's oldest continuously operating commercial winery; Beringer followed in 1876. The stone Greystone Cellars, built in 1889 as a cooperative winery and later held by the Christian Brothers, was converted in 1995 into the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, giving the town a professional cooking school embedded in a former winery — an unusual concentration of viticultural and culinary instruction in a community of a few thousand residents.
Restaurant life in St. Helena took its modern shape in the late twentieth century, as Napa's wine reputation drew cooking that aimed to match it. Tra Vigne, opened in 1987 and closed in 2015, was among the town's defining rooms and helped popularize a California-Italian idiom of house-cured salumi and wood-fired cooking. Later kitchens continued the pattern of building menus around the valley's bottles and produce: Press, opened in 2005, organized a steakhouse program around Napa Cabernet, while The Charter Oak, opened in 2017 by Christopher Kostow, worked in open-hearth cooking and estate-grown vegetables. Wine, rather than cocktails or beer, remains the town's governing beverage context.
