South Salt Lake

South Salt Lake's documented food story is industrial and recent. In December 2017 its City Council voted 6-0 to strike a set of liquor ordinances — among them a cap of one brewery per 10,000 residents and a five-barrel minimum production requirement — at the urging of Councilman Johnny McConnell, who argued that alcohol producers taking over vacant warehouses near West Temple, TRAX and the S-Line could drive revitalization. The city had two breweries then: SaltFire Brewing Co., run by Ryan Miller, and Shades of Pale, whose taproom occupies a former Hi-Grade meat-packing plant where hot dogs were made — a literal handover from food processing to brewing. Level Crossing Brewing Company, founded by Mark Medura, opened in 2018 and added a Post District location in 2023; Grid City Beer Works works from 2100 South.

Distilling settled on the same warehouse footing, with Dented Brick on South Washington Street and Sugar House Distillery, where James Fowler mills regionally sourced grain into malt whiskey, bourbon, rye and vodka.

The restaurant record runs along State Street, where a cluster of immigrant-run kitchens and dumpling houses is now commonly described as South Salt Lake's Chinatown, part of a broadly international dining corridor that regional food writers have catalogued more thoroughly than any formal history has.
