Jamal James Kent (May 2, 1979 – June 15, 2024) was a New York chef who began cooking as a teenage apprentice at Bouley, studied at Le Cordon Bleu in London and Paris and at Johnson & Wales University, and cooked at Babbo and Jean-Georges before joining Eleven Madison Park, where he became chef de cuisine in 2010; he won the Bocuse d'Or USA that year and placed tenth at the international competition in Lyon in 2011. In 2013 he was named executive chef of the NoMad, and in 2019 he opened his first solo restaurant, Crown Shy, on the ground floor of 70 Pine Street in Manhattan's Financial District, followed in 2021 by the tasting-menu restaurant Saga on the 63rd floor and the cocktail bar Overstory above it. All three earned recognition — a Michelin star for Crown Shy, two for Saga — and operated under the group he founded, later named Kent Hospitality Group; he died in June 2024 at age 45, with Charlie Mitchell succeeding him as head chef at Saga.
