Eating & drinking in Atlanta

Atlanta's restaurant record rests on mid-century Southern cooking. Mary Mac's Tea Room, open since 1945, is the last survivor of a postwar cluster of Atlanta "tea rooms" — a term women adopted when restaurant ownership was closed to them. Margaret Lupo bought it in 1962 and ran it as one of the city's first integrated businesses; the Georgia House of Representatives named it "Atlanta's dining room" in 2011. Busy Bee Cafe followed in 1947 under self-taught cook Lucy "Momma Lucy" Jackson.

Black-owned dining rooms were infrastructure for the civil rights movement. Paschal's began in 1947 as a thirty-seat luncheonette on West Hunter Street, opened by brothers James and Robert Paschal, who served Black and white patrons in defiance of segregation law and ran the adjoining La Carrousel jazz lounge. Akila Sankar McConnell, author of A Culinary History of Atlanta, credits such restaurateurs with feeding and funding the movement. The 1960 sit-in at the Magnolia Room, inside Rich's department store, brought more than fifty arrests, Martin Luther King Jr. among them.

Later: Pano Karatassos and Paul Albrecht opened Pano's & Paul's in 1979, seeding the Buckhead Life Restaurant Group; Bacchanalia took a Michelin star in 2023; Canton House helped make Buford Highway a global dining corridor in the 1990s. Manuel's Tavern, founded 1956 by Manuel Maloof, remains the city's political barroom.
